Benefits of Electrolytes (And When To Take Them)

I’ve added electrolytes to my daily routine to improve energy levels, and support hydration, athletic performance and muscle recovery. In this overview, I’m breaking down what electrolytes are, how they benefit you, and how you should replenish them.

This post is brought to you in partnership with LMNT. All words and opinions are my own. Thank you for supporting the brands that make Nourish Move Love and all the content you see on this blog possible.

I get emails and DMs daily from people asking how I have the energy to manage everything. My answer isn’t a pre-workout…it’s proper hydration.

Hydration is key to supporting mood and energy levels. And an electrolyte-rich drink mix like LMNT promotes healthy hydration.

I’ve always prioritized strength training, a high protein diet, and sleep. But after incorporating electrolytes into my daily routine, I’ve found that I recover better, which has ultimately led to better workouts.

What Are Electrolytes?

Electrolytes are essential minerals (like calcium, sodium and potassium) that your body needs to function. These minerals have a positive or negative charge after being dissolved in water or blood.

While electrolytes don’t actually supply energy, you need them in small amounts to support your metabolism, immunity, and to maintain your body’s fluid balance.

Benefits of Electrolytes

Electrolytes help keep our muscles functioning properly while maintaining fluid balance. Having a proper store of electrolytes can support healthy blood pressure, improve sleep and mental focus, and prevent a number of issues such as headaches, muscle cramps, and fatigue.

Your electrolyte levels are depleted when you sweat, so it’s important to replace them. An electrolyte drink mix provides a simple way to replenish those necessary minerals.

When Do You Need Extra Electrolytes?

You may need to replenish your levels of electrolytes if you notice:

  1. Dehydration. If drinking water isn’t quenching your thirst, especially after a sweaty workout, you need to replenish your electrolytes.
  2. Muscle cramps. Experiencing muscle cramps, spasms, or weakness can indicate an electrolyte imbalance.
  3. Low energy and mood. Feeling low on energy or experiencing mood swings might be due to a lack of essential minerals like potassium, which are vital for metabolism and nervous system function.
  4. Sweating more than usual. If you tend to sweat heavily or notice salty sweat marks on your skin, you might be losing more electrolytes and need to replenish them more frequently.

When Should You Take Electrolytes?

The best time to take electrolytes varies depending on several circumstances including physical activity, hydration levels, and personal needs. In general, I recommend taking them before, during, or after strength training or high intensity workouts, or when you’re starting to feel dehydrated.

Electrolyte supplements may benefit you:

  • During exercise. If you’re sweating a lot while exercising, you may need to replenish electrolytes. Particularly if you’ve been exercising for more than an hour.
  • While sick. Drinking electrolytes when sick can help rebalance your body if you’ve been losing fluids due to illness.
  • When traveling. Increasing your electrolyte intake before and during travel can combat dehydration from high altitudes, low airplane humidity, and increased activity.
  • After a night of drinking. Replenishing electrolytes before or after consuming alcohol can help prevent dehydration and hangovers.

I personally drink electrolytes during my workout. I add half a packet of LMNT and 5g of creatine to 30 ounces of water.

Electrolytes are safe to drink every day, particularly if you need to stay ahead of dehydration and prevent muscle cramps.
