There are so many mornings I’d rather sleep in than wake up early to spend time at the feet of Jesus. So many days I want to keep score of all that I’ve accomplished in the house rather than humbly serving my family.
However, if there was a time that Jesus joined me for dinner, then asked me to stay awake and pray with him; it’s easy to think that OF COURSE I would stay awake and pray with him!
But if I believe that Jesus suffered death on the cross to remove the barrier between me and God…then Jesus presence is all around me. And the Holy Spirit within me.
Because I am human {flesh}. I am a sinner. I am weak.
I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out {Romans 7:18}, without Jesus.
Just like Jesus was inviting his disciples to pray with him in the Garden of Gethsemane, he’s inviting me {and you} deeper into life with him.
Dear God,
My spirit is willing, but my flesh is weak.
Help me stay awake, and alert so I do not fall into temptation, but rather fall deeper into the work you are calling me to do.

For full context on this verse read Matthew 26: 36-41.
And if the topic of flesh vs. spirit interests you, further read: Galatians 6:8; Romans 7:18; Romans 7:21-25.
